The armillary sphere (named like this as it's composed by circles, called armilla in latin) is an instrument used to show the apparent movement of the stars around the Earth or the Sun (most rarely). The circles of the model represent the equator, the ecliptic, the meridians and the parallels of the body. Invented by the greek astronomer Eratosthenes (III bC c.), it has been used since Ancient times to navigate and even as a symbol of power and wisdom.
From the XVI century the flag and the coat-of-arms of Portugal include an armillary sphere, raised as a national symbol of this Country.

Height: 50 cm.
Diameter: 35 cm.
Material: brass and wood.
